Metito Continues To Showcase Pioneering Water Management In The GCC

Metito introduces a 45 million AED expansion on its existing build-operate-transfer (BOT) wastewater treatment project at Dubai Investment Park. The project was the first of its kind in GCC when it was commenced back in 1999.

The recently completed expansion of the project takes the total installed capacity to 31,000m3/day. Future expansions in the Park are expected to bring the total capacity to 80,000m3/day. Services provided by Metito Utilities include the financing, design, supply, installation, commissioning, operation, maintenance and the eventual transfer of the wastewater treatment plant. The plant is modular in design, allowing for the addition of phases based on continuous growth of DIP. The entire project will service 23 Square Kilometers and a population of 350,000, when completed.

Rami Ghandour, Executive Director of Metito Utilities said: “Metito’s holistic approach ensures there is a strong focus on design, project management, and operations and maintenance. With our considerable experience we have been able to provide DIP a fully customised modular system, which is also environmentally-friendly and cost effective.”

A true thought leader in providing customised solutions, based on its global know how and strong local presence, Metito has pioneered concepts such as BOT in the MENA region. The cost effective modular system provides high quality water for irrigation, thus minimising the environmental impact by reusing the treated water, which is always central to Metito’s approach.

“Quality water for irrigation is a fundamental requirement for the development of DIP” adds Walid Madwar, General Manager of Metito Utilities. “It is very important to maintain strong infrastructure to help support the ambitions of DIP. Metito is a pioneer in water and the wastewater treatment industry and we have the expertise and local knowledge to carry out this kind of important project.”

Dubai Investments Park (DIP) is a mixed use development offering facilities and services for manufacturing, housing, education, research and development, distribution and logistics sectors. Metito has a 30 year contract to provide a build operate transfer sewage treatment plant that treats domestic and semi-domestic (light industrial) waste to increase water recovery. Treated water produced by the plant is primarily used for irrigation purposes maximizing the use of available water resources and minimizing the discharge of waste into the environment.

Metito treats 792m gallons of wastewater every day and is ranked by the IDA (The International Desalination Association) as one of the pioneers in the reverse osmosis system technology in recognition for installing over 2,000 desalination plants across the ME, Africa, Asia and Europe. Metito was the first company outside the US to commercialize desalination by reverse osmosis in 1972 and the company has continued to innovate, establishing it as the thought leader of the desalination and wastewater treatment industry.

Metito’s commitment to the environment extends to its main head quarters, which is the first private green building in the UAE. The company was also elected to the IDA taskforce which studies the environmental impact of desalination.
